Page 23 - Crab Patties. Aunt Clara

page 23
I love the heading of this page.  Crab Patties.  Aunt Clara.  I don't know if you ever prepared "Aunt Clara" but it's a wonderful dish, though a bit complicated.

I kid.  I don't know who Aunt Clara was, but I do know she was one of the reasons that my sister is also named Clara.    Does anyone have any insight on Aunt Clara and her relationship to the family?  "Aunt" can sometimes be an unhelpful label.

Bonus!  The Shrimp Macaroni Salad!!!!!!!!!!  I love macaroni salad.  It is the headline dish in my last meal menu.  And adding shrimp?  Perfect!

Love this woman and how she took the time to type and hand cut out the curves on this little chapter title page.  She would have love  love loved all the things we can do in self publishing these days.

Page 21 - Fried Chicken

page 21

Fried Chicken!  Yum!  I like this recipe, it has very simple ingredients that I always keep around.  Also it has a version at the bottom that is totally cooked in the oven, so no pan frying needed.

Page 19 - Chili Con Carne

page 19

Page 19 gives us a pretty standard chili recipe, which I will transcribe below.  The real question on this page is - was Florence Worman a Virgo like the note paper says?  (August 24th - September 23rd)     A virgo is described as: (by astrology.com for all of your astrology needs)
Virgo is the sixth sign of the zodiac, to be exact, and that's the way Virgos like it: exacting. Those born under this sign are forever the butt of jokes for being so picky and critical (and they can be), but their 'attention to detail' is for a reason: to help others. Virgos, more than any other sign, were born to serve, and it gives them great joy. They are also tailor-made for the job, since they are industrious, methodical and efficient. The sense of duty borne by these folks is considerable, and it ensures that they will always work for the greater good.
I didn't know Florence very well, as she passed when I was in elementary school. But based on this notebook and her famous typed joke cards, I can see how she could be called exacting.  Anybody know if she fit this bill?

Chili Con Carne

1 lb. light red kidney beans
1/2 c. chopped onion
2 lb. ground beef
1 qt. tomatoes
1tsp. chili powder

Rinse and sort beans, cook until tender.
Heat 3 tblspn. bacon fat in a skillet and brown onion, add ground beef and cook slowly for several minutes.  Combine in large kettle with tomatoes, add chili powder, heat to boiling point and serve.

"I had "Jack Rabbit" brand beans."

I was gone for 9 months....

And I didn't have a baby!

I did get married, move across the country, start working again, paint two thirds of my apartment, sew a lot, and audit 1.5 semesters of dental school.

But I have scanned the rest of the cookbook and am determined to finish the book.
